How This Course Works
Work through the modules in order the first time — later ones assume the vocabulary and muscle memory from earlier ones. Each module has the same shape:
- Lessons — each module is broken into focused lessons, so you can study in short sessions.

What editing is really doing
Editing is the invisible art of storytelling through arrangement. Raw footage is just moments; an edit decides which moments, how long each one lasts, and what order they appear in. The same footage cut two different ways can feel like a comedy or a thriller — the classic demonstration of this is the "Kuleshov effect," where audiences read emotion into a neutral shot purely based on what shot comes before or after it.
Who's in the room: post-production roles
- Editor — assembles and shapes the story from raw footage.
- Assistant editor — organizes and preps media, syncs sound, manages the project on larger productions.
- Colorist — handles color correction and grading, sometimes as a separate specialist on bigger projects.
- Sound designer / mixer — builds and balances the final audio mix.
- Motion graphics / VFX artist — builds animated titles, compositing, and visual effects.
On small projects, one person (you) often plays all of these roles — which is exactly why this course covers all of them.
Core vocabulary
- Clip — a single piece of video or audio media.
- Timeline / Sequence — the horizontal arrangement of clips you're building your final video from.
- Track — a horizontal lane on the timeline (video tracks stack visually, audio tracks mix together).
- In point / Out point — the start and end frame you choose to use from a longer clip.
- Cut — the point where one clip ends and another begins.
- Rough cut → Fine cut → Final cut / Picture lock — the standard progression of an edit.
- A-roll / B-roll — main subject/interview footage vs. supplementary cutaway footage.
File types, codecs & containers (in plain English)
A container (.mp4, .mov, .mxf) is like a box; a codec (H.264, H.265/HEVC, ProRes, DNxHD) is the compression method used to pack video inside that box. Camera footage is usually delivered highly compressed (H.264/H.265) to save space, while professional intermediate/export formats like ProRes or DNxHD trade file size for editing performance and quality. You don't need to memorize every codec — just know that "my footage plays choppy" is very often a codec/hardware mismatch, solved in Module 3 with proxies.

Terminology scavenger hunt

Editors aren't only involved after filming — understanding pre-production helps you shoot (or brief a shooter) in a way that actually gives you enough to cut with.
Storyboards & shot lists
A storyboard is a sequence of sketches or reference images showing key shots and camera angles before filming — a comic-strip version of your video. A shot list is the same planning distilled into a checklist: shot type, camera movement, and notes, organized so a crew can shoot efficiently (often grouped by location or setup rather than final story order).
Why editors care about this stage
- A good shot list normally guarantees coverage — enough angles (wide, medium, close-up) to actually build a scene in the edit instead of getting stuck with only one usable angle.
- Editors who understand the planning intent can make better judgment calls about pacing and structure, instead of just executing literally what was captured.
- If you shoot your own content, keeping even an 8–12 shot simple list dramatically increases what you'll have to work with later.
Editor's notes & organizing incoming footage
On any shoot with a script supervisor or director, footage often arrives with notes on preferred takes. Even solo, adopt the habit: log which takes you like right after filming, while memory is fresh — "Take 3, best energy but flubbed line at 0:12" saves real time later versus re-watching everything cold during the edit.

Build a shot list from a script
- Write (or find) a simple 5-line scene description — even "making coffee in the morning" counts.

- Note the shot type (wide/medium/close-up) and any camera movement for each line.

Project & folder structure
Before importing anything, build a folder skeleton. A simple, durable structure:

Never edit directly off an SD card or a cloud-sync folder — copy footage to a local drive first, and back it up before you delete anything from the card.
Proxies (why your timeline stutters)
4K/6K/8K footage often plays back stutter-y on modest hardware. A proxy is a small, low-resolution stand-in your software edits smoothly, then automatically swaps back to the full-quality original at export time. If your editing feels laggy before you've even added an effect, generating proxies is almost always the fix — not upgrading your computer.
Premiere Pro
- Right-click the clip(s) in the Project panel → Proxy → Create Proxies.
- Choose a preset (e.g. ProRes Proxy or H.264 quarter-resolution) and click OK.
- Toggle the proxy icon at the bottom of the Program monitor to switch between proxy and full-res.
DaVinci Resolve
- Go to Playback → Proxy Mode → Half Resolution (or Quarter).
- Right-click a clip in the Media Pool → Generate Proxy Media for a rendered proxy file.

Set up a real project
- Create the folder structure above for a small project (even a 1-minute phone video counts).
- Import your footage into your chosen editor and confirm it plays back without stuttering.

Core trim tools

- Slip / Slide edit — changes which part of the source clip is shown without moving it on the timeline.

Premiere Pro
- Press C to grab the Razor tool, click on the timeline to slice a clip.
- Press V to return to the Selection tool.
- Select a clip and press Shift+Delete to ripple delete it.
- Hover a clip edge until you see the roll-edit icon, then drag to adjust the cut point.
- With the playhead positioned, press M to drop a marker.
DaVinci Resolve (Cut or Edit page)
- Press Cmd/Ctrl+B to blade a clip at the playhead.
- Select a clip and press Shift+X to ripple delete.
- Drag a clip's edge while holding near the adjacent clip to trigger a roll trim.
- Press M to add a marker; double-click it to add a note.
CapCut
- Position the playhead, click the Split (scissors) icon to cut a clip in two.
- Select an unwanted segment, press Delete — CapCut auto-closes the gap.

Assemble a 30-second rough cut
- Gather 5–10 clips (even phone clips of your day work fine).
- Drag them onto the timeline in a rough order.
- Use the razor tool to trim each clip to only its best few seconds.
- Use ripple delete to remove one clip entirely and confirm the gap closes.
- Drop 3 markers on moments you might want to revisit.
M5 — The Art of the Cut

J-cuts and L-cuts
In a J-cut, the audio from the next shot begins before its video appears. In an L-cut, the audio from the current shot continues after the video has already cut to the next shot. Both make dialogue scenes feel natural instead of robotic.
Continuity
Continuity editing hides the "seams" of production: matching an actor's hand position across a cut, keeping consistent screen direction (the 180-degree rule), and matching eyelines. When continuity breaks, audiences feel something is "off" even if they can't say why.
Jump cuts — the vlogger's cut
A jump cut joins two shots of the same subject with a small change in position or time, deliberately breaking traditional continuity. Once considered a mistake, it's now the backbone of talking-head vlogs and tutorials — removing pauses, filler words, and dead air to keep pace tight. Used too often without variety in angle/framing, jump cuts feel jarring rather than energetic, so pair them with occasional cutaways to B-roll.
Premiere Pro / Resolve
- Unlink or select only the video portion of the second clip.
- Drag the video-only edge earlier so it starts before the audio cut point (creating the "L" shape on the timeline).
- Add a short audio crossfade at the true cut point if you hear a pop.
- Give an example of when you'd use an L-cut in an interview edit.
- Why can overusing jump cuts backfire, and how do you counteract it?
Recut a scene for pacing
- Take your Module 4 rough cut (or any dialogue clip) and rebuild it using at least one J-cut and one L-cut.
- Separately, film 20 seconds of yourself talking to camera and edit it down using jump cuts to remove every pause and filler word.
- Watch both versions back-to-back and note what changed emotionally or energetically.
M6 — Transitions & Pacing

Transition types
- Cut — instant change; the default and correct choice 90% of the time.
- Cross dissolve — one shot fades into the next; implies time passing or a soft emotional shift.
- Wipe — one shot pushes the other off screen; energetic and fast-paced.
- Whip pan — a fast blurred camera motion connects two shots; high energy.
- Speed ramp — a clip smoothly changes speed to add impact to a specific moment.
Pacing as a design choice
Pacing is set as early as the shot list (Module 2): a tense scene calls for more shots and tighter framing, while a slow emotional beat calls for longer holds and fewer cuts. In the edit, average shot length is a quick diagnostic — if every shot is 5+ seconds in a video meant to feel urgent, that's usually the real problem, not the transitions.
Premiere Pro
- Right-click the clip → Show Clip Keyframes → Time Remapping → Speed.
- Add keyframes on the speed line and drag segments up (faster) or down (slower).
- Drag the small handles at each keyframe to create a smooth ramp instead of a hard jump.
DaVinci Resolve
- Right-click the clip → Change Clip Speed, or use the Retime Controls (Cmd/Ctrl+R) for dynamic ramps.
- Add speed points along the clip and adjust the curve for a smooth ramp.
- Why would a cross dissolve suit a "time passing" moment better than a hard cut?

Five-clip montage, three transition types
- Select 5 clips of the same subject (a walk, a meal, a workout, anything).
- Cut them together using: 1 hard cut, 1 cross dissolve, 1 whip pan or wipe.
- Add one speed ramp on whichever clip has the most motion.
M7 — Editing to Music & Rhythm

Beat mapping
Drop your music track on the timeline first, then place a marker on every strong beat (or every downbeat, for a calmer edit) using your software's marker shortcut while listening back. This turns an abstract rhythm into visible landmarks you can snap cuts to.
Cutting on vs. against the beat
Cutting exactly on strong downbeats feels satisfying and intentional — the default choice for montages, intros, and music videos. Cutting deliberately against the beat (syncopation) can create tension or a more unpredictable feeling, but should be a choice, not an accident from sloppy placement.
Premiere Pro / Resolve
- Import your track and drop it on an audio track.
- Play back at reduced speed if needed; press M on every downbeat.
- Enable Snapping so your video cuts magnetically snap to the markers.
Final Cut Pro
- Select the music clip → Option+B to auto-analyze and generate beat markers.
- Why place markers on beats before cutting, rather than cutting by eye and ear alone?

Beat-synced 30-second montage
- Choose an upbeat music track and drop it first on the timeline.
- Mark every downbeat for 30 seconds.
- Cut 8–12 short clips so each cut lands on a marker.
- Add one moment where you intentionally cut off-beat, and note why you chose that spot.
M8 — Titles & Graphics

Lower thirds & title safety
A lower third is a name/title graphic placed in the lower area of frame. Keep all critical text inside the title-safe area — roughly the inner 90% of frame — since displays and social platform crops will clip the outer edges.
Type legibility on video
- Use a bold, simple typeface — thin serif fonts often disappear over moving footage.
- Add a subtle drop shadow, outline, or semi-transparent background box behind text over busy footage.
- Hold text on screen long enough to read it twice, minimum.
Captions & subtitles
Auto-generated captions are a fast starting point but should always be manually proofread — names, technical terms, and background noise reliably trip up automatic transcription. See the Captioning Cheat Sheet in the Appendix.
Premiere Pro
- Text panel → New Text Layer, or use Essential Graphics for a styled title template.
- For captions: Text panel → Transcribe Sequence, review the transcript, then Create Captions.
DaVinci Resolve
- Effects Library → Titles → drag a title onto the timeline, edit text in the Inspector.
- For captions: Timeline → Create Subtitles from Audio.
CapCut
- Open the Text panel → Auto Caption to transcribe automatically.
- Proofread and correct any errors directly in the caption editor.
- Pick a caption style, then export burned-in or as a separate file.

Build a title + lower third + captions
- Create an opening title card with your project's name, held for at least 2 seconds.

Why audio matters more than people expect
Viewers tolerate mediocre visuals far more than they tolerate bad audio. Good audio is judged by how invisible it feels, not how impressive it sounds.
The four sound layers
- Dialogue — should almost always be the clearest, most prominent element.
- Music — should duck under dialogue rather than compete with it.
- Sound effects (SFX) / Foley — punctuate specific actions.
- Ambience / room tone — fills silences naturally so cuts don't sound like they drop into a vacuum.
Basic cleanup tools
- Noise reduction / de-noise — removes constant background hiss, hums, or fan noise.
- EQ — boosts or cuts specific frequency ranges.
- Compression — automatically evens out a track's loud and quiet moments.
- Audio ducking — automatically lowers music whenever dialogue is detected.
AI-assisted audio cleanup
Modern NLEs now ship AI-powered voice tools that go well beyond a simple noise gate: voice isolation separates speech from background noise using a trained model rather than a fixed frequency cut, and dialogue leveler/separator tools can automatically even out volume between speakers or isolate voice from ambience entirely. These tools are dramatically faster than manual EQ/noise-reduction chains, but can introduce a slightly synthetic, "processed" tone at high strength — start at a low intensity and increase only as needed, and always A/B against the untouched track.
Premiere Pro (ducking)
- Select the music clip → open the Essential Sound panel → tag it as Music.
- Enable Duck Audio Against and select your dialogue track; adjust sensitivity and amount.
DaVinci Resolve (AI Voice Isolation)
- Select the audio clip → open the Inspector → Audio tab.
- Toggle Voice Isolation on and drag the intensity slider while previewing.
- For Studio-tier users, try Dialogue Leveler or Dialogue Separator for more control.
- Why record room tone even if a scene has no obvious silence in it?

Full 4-layer sound mix
- Record 30 seconds of yourself talking (a phone mic is fine), plus 20 seconds of room tone in the same space.
- Layer in a music track underneath, ducked whenever you speak.
- Add one or two simple foley/SFX hits timed to specific actions on screen.
- Run your dialogue through an AI noise-reduction or voice-isolation tool at a low setting and compare to the raw take.
M10 — Color Correction & Grading

Correction vs. grading
Color correction is fixing problems: incorrect white balance, under/overexposure, mismatched cameras. Color grading is a creative choice layered on top: warming a sunset, desaturating a horror scene, crushing blacks for a moody look. Always correct before you grade.
Reading scopes
- Waveform monitor — shows brightness levels; helps avoid clipped highlights or crushed shadows.
- Vectorscope — shows color/hue information; checks skin tones and white balance skew.
Node-based vs. layer-based grading, and LUTs
DaVinci Resolve uses a node-based color pipeline — each correction is a separate node you can chain, branch, or reorder. Premiere Pro's Lumetri panel is more of a stacked, single-clip adjustment panel. A LUT (Look-Up Table) is a preset color transform — a starting point to adjust from, not a finished grade.
AI-assisted color matching
Most modern colorists still grade by eye and scope, but AI shot-matching tools (e.g. Resolve's color match/auto-balance features, or Premiere's auto-match against a reference frame) can analyze a reference clip and propose a starting correction that gets mismatched footage into the same ballpark in seconds — genuinely useful for quickly aligning many clips from different cameras before you do the final creative pass by hand.
DaVinci Resolve (Color page)
- Open the Color page, select a clip, and open the Color Wheels panel.
- Enable the Waveform scope (top-right icon) and adjust Lift/Gamma/Gain until levels sit within a safe range.
- Add a new Serial Node (press S) before applying a creative LUT, so correction and grading stay separate and adjustable.
Premiere Pro (Lumetri)
- Open the Lumetri Color panel and the Lumetri Scopes panel side by side.
- Use Basic Correction: adjust Exposure, Contrast, White Balance while watching the waveform.
- Apply a LUT or Creative look in a separate section afterward, and adjust Intensity to taste.
- Why should correction always come before grading?

Match and grade three clips
- Film (or find) three clips of the same subject shot at different times of day or with different white balance settings.
- Use the waveform/vectorscope to correct exposure and white balance until all three look like they belong in the same scene.
- If available, try an automatic color-match tool first, then manually refine the result.
- Apply one consistent creative grade across all three.
M11 — Effects, Keying & Motion Graphics

Keyframes — the basis of all animation
A keyframe stores a property's value (position, scale, opacity, rotation) at a specific point in time. Set two keyframes with different values and the software automatically calculates every frame in between.
Stabilization
Most NLEs include a one-click stabilizer (e.g. Warp Stabilizer) that analyzes shaky handheld footage and smooths the motion. It works by cropping in slightly, so very shaky footage stabilized aggressively can lose resolution at the edges — always preview at 100% before trusting the result.
Green screen (chroma key)
Keying removes a solid, evenly-lit background color so you can replace it with other footage or graphics. Even lighting and a wrinkle-free, evenly colored screen matter more than any keying plugin. The typical workflow: apply a keying effect, sample the green with an eyedropper, then refine edges and suppress any green "spill" reflected onto your subject.
When to bring in After Effects
Reach for a dedicated motion graphics tool like After Effects when you need layered compositing, particle effects, or reusable animated templates — these are often exported as a MOGRT (Motion Graphics Template) so an editor can drop them into Premiere and customize text/color without touching After Effects again.
Premiere Pro
- Select a clip → Effect Controls panel → click the stopwatch next to Position/Scale/Opacity to start keyframing.
- Move the playhead, change the value — a new keyframe is added automatically.
- Stabilize: Effects panel → search "Warp Stabilizer" → drag onto the clip and let it analyze.
- Key: drag Ultra Key onto a green-screen clip → use the eyedropper on the green → refine Matte Generation settings.
DaVinci Resolve
- Inspector panel → click the keyframe diamond next to a property to start animating.
- Stabilize: Color page → Tracker palette → Stabilizer mode → Analyze.
- Key: Color page → add a Qualifier node, sample the green, then add a Blur node on the matte edges to soften.

Text-based editing
Tools like Descript transcribe your footage into an editable transcript — delete a word in the text, and the matching video/audio is cut automatically. This turns editing talking-head content into something closer to editing a Word document, which is dramatically faster for dialogue-heavy, interview, or tutorial content than scrubbing a timeline by ear. It's less useful for highly visual, montage-style, or music-driven editing, where the picture (not the words) drives the cut.
Where AI genuinely speeds up an edit
- Auto-transcription & captions — near-instant speech-to-text, though names, jargon, and noisy audio still need a manual proofread pass.
- Silence/filler-word removal — automatically detects and cuts dead air and "ums," similar to manual jump-cutting but much faster on long recordings.
- AI reframing — automatically tracks a subject to reformat a horizontal video into vertical (9:16) or square, useful for repurposing one shoot across platforms.
- AI background removal — a one-click alternative to traditional green-screen keying when you don't have a physical green screen, though edge quality is usually softer than a proper key.
- Generative fill / object removal — removes an unwanted object (a boom mic, a stray passerby) by generating plausible replacement pixels, rather than requiring frame-by-frame manual cloning.
- AI upscaling — increases resolution using a trained model rather than simple pixel stretching, useful for salvaging old or low-res footage, though it can invent detail that wasn't really there.

Where AI still needs a human pass
AI transcripts mishear names and technical terms; AI reframing can crop out an important second subject; AI-generated fill can look uncanny on close inspection; AI upscaling can smear fine detail like text or fabric texture. Treat every AI pass as a fast first draft, not a final decision — the same discipline you'd apply to an auto-generated caption (Module 8) applies to every AI tool in this module.
A note on ethics and disclosure
AI voice cloning, AI-generated video/B-roll, and heavily AI-altered footage raise real questions around consent and audience trust — using someone's likeness or voice without permission, or presenting AI-generated footage as real documentary footage, can be genuinely deceptive. As a working practice: get consent for any voice/likeness use, and when a piece relies heavily on AI-generated visuals rather than real footage, disclose that where your audience would reasonably expect real footage (e.g. news, documentary) — the same standard applied to any other form of manipulated media.

Edit a clip with a text-based or AI-assisted tool

Multicam editing
When you've filmed the same event from two or more angles, multicam tools sync all cameras — usually via a shared audio waveform or a clap/slate — into one grouped clip, then let you switch between angles like a live TV director while watching all feeds simultaneously.
Collaborating on a project
- Agree on a shared folder structure before anyone starts (see Module 3).
- Use consistent naming: dates, camera labels, and take numbers prevent confusion fast.

Backups: the 3-2-1 rule

Choosing style intentionally
Before opening your editor, decide: what genre am I closest to, and which of its conventions actually serve this specific piece? A corporate testimonial edited like a music video will feel off-brand; a wedding highlight edited like a static corporate reel will feel lifeless. Style should follow the content's goal, not habit.

Frame rate and resolution matching
Export at the same frame rate you shot and edited in — converting between frame rates after the fact causes stutter or unwanted motion smoothing. Match resolution to genuine need: exporting a phone-shot 1080p video "up" to 4K doesn't add real detail, it just inflates file size.
Premiere Pro
- File → Export → Media (or Cmd/Ctrl+M).
